Short answer: recreational cannabis is illegal in Greece. Medical cannabis is legal with a doctor’s prescription and is sold only in pharmacies. CBD products are allowed with limits, but since 2026 dried cannabis flower can no longer be sold in shops.
Is recreational weed legal in Greece?
No. Under Greek drug law (Law 4139/2013, Article 29), possessing or growing cannabis for your own use is a crime that can be punished with up to 5 months in prison. A court may leave a one-off offence unpunished, but that is at the court’s discretion. Selling or supplying cannabis carries much heavier penalties.
The same laws apply to tourists. Do not bring cannabis into Greece, even if it is legal where you live.
Is medical cannabis legal in Greece?
Yes. Greece allowed medical cannabis in 2017, and locally produced products reached Greek pharmacies in February 2024. Key rules:
- Prescription only. Products are dispensed by pharmacies with an electronic prescription.
- Specialist first. The first prescription must come from an anaesthesiologist, neurologist, oncologist, infectious-disease specialist or rheumatologist. Other doctors can repeat it for up to 6 months.
- Approved conditions only. For adults, when standard treatments have not worked: severe nausea from chemotherapy or radiotherapy, chronic cancer pain, neuropathic pain, spasticity from MS or spinal cord injury, appetite loss in palliative care, and symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease.
- Vaporised, not smoked. Dried flower is used with a certified (CE-marked) vaporiser.
- Not reimbursed. Patients pay the full price, about €15–€17 per gram based on the 2024 official price list.

Is CBD legal in Greece?
CBD products are still allowed, as long as they meet EU novel-food and safety rules. But the rules tightened in 2026:
- Law 5302/2026 (May 2026) bans the retail sale and consumer use of dried cannabis flower, even with 0.3% THC or less.
- Cannabis products were withdrawn from kiosks (periptera) and mini-markets.
- A Ministry of Health circular (September 2026) bans vape, inhalable and smokable cannabinoid products, and THC in foods and supplements.
Can I drive after using medical cannabis?
Be careful. Greece’s Highway Code bans driving under the influence of medicines that affect your ability to drive, with penalties including prison, fines and licence suspension. The official product information says patients should not drive for at least 7 days after their dose is stabilised.
